Maire 19th Century
This lovely 19th century guitar is from the French luthier Aubry Maire. The inlay work is pearl and paste a decorative form commonly used on jewelry boxes and other ornate items during this time. The technique is to make a paste of “lamp black,” essentially soot, and inlay hand carved pearl pieces into the paste. In addition to the inlay work this guitar has a lovely one piece (not book matched) Brazilian rosewood back. Years ago when Eduardo Fernandez was in town he treated us to a short performance on this guitar. It, of course, sounded wonderful!
