Roland Dyens Concert Review
On September 27th the Seattle Classic Guitar Society’s 2014-2015 season kicked off with Roland Dyens performing before an enthusiastic audience at Benaroya Recital Hall. Roland began the evening, as he usually does, with an improvised piece. A big part of Dyens’ approach is to connect with the audience and to create a mood and experience unique to each performance. None of the pieces were announced ahead of time nor were there program notes hinting at the repertoire to be presented. Instead Dyens told a story for each piece relating to the audience on a personal level and playing for the mood of the evening. Judging by the audience reaction Dyens succeeded on all counts.
The program was wide ranging including Dyens’ own compositions, and arrangements from composers including Baden Powell, Chopin, Villa-Lobos and Tchaikovsky. Dyens played with great dynamic range and a broad tonal palette. His musical sensitivity was in evidence throughout the night as was his technical virtuosity. The audience was treated to two encores including a lively performance of Jobim’s Felicidade.
Afterward an ever-gracious Dyens came to the lobby to greet the audience, sign CDs and even thank the ushers!
